The basement of the house can be very vulnerable if proper care is not taken. As the homeowner rarely goes there, it often remains very dusty and dirty most of the time, it can even get water stuck inside because of rain or pipe leakage.

This can cause the entire basement to be soggy and the more water gets clogged, the more unhealthy the whole house will become. So, to prevent water from getting trapped or to remove the stuck water from the area, a sump pump is required.

What Are Sump Pumps?

Sump Pumps are draining devices that you install in your basement. These pumps drain out extra water that gets stuck in your basement because of heavy rain, flood, or any pipe leakage.

A big pit is constructed below the basement and the pumps drain out the water from the basement and release them into that pit, thus protecting your basement and house.

Now that you know what sump pumps are and what they do, here are a few reasons why you should install a sump pump in your house.

1. Keeps The Basement Water Free

The whole purpose of sump pumps is to remove any water from the basement and keep the basement dry.

The pump inside the basement extracts the extra water and drains them out through a pipe. The pipe can lead to the sewer line outside, or a pit constructed beforehand under the basement.

There is also a valve that prevents the water from flowing backward. So there is no risk of water from the sewer or the pit to flow back into your basement.

Most of these pumps are electronic devices, but they also run on battery so there is no risk of having an electric wire malfunction. To make sure they run longer there are different ways to back up your sump pump. For instance, you can add another battery to provide backup.

2. Prevents Mold Or Mildew Growth

When the environment is soggy, wet, humid and there is stagnant water, the place will likely have mold or mildew growing.

These molds and mildew can damage the foundation of the basement, and too much mold can even destroy any wooden structure in the basement. It can grow and further damage the walls.

So, to prevent mold or mildew from forming in your basement, you should have sump pumps to drain out the excess water. If the basement is dry, mold and mildews cannot grow.

3. Gives Warning About The Water Level

There are various types of sump pumps. Some sump pumps are technologically advanced and have several key features.

One of the key features these advanced sump pumps have is the ability to alert the homeowner through a phone signal if the water level gets alarmingly high.

This allows the homeowner to take the necessary steps to remove excess water. Some sump pumps also have an alarm system that sends a signal to the owner of the pump if it is not functioning properly or needs repair.

With these early warnings, the homeowner can call in a plumber and take care of the issue to avoid any serious damage.

4. Increases Property Value

If you are about to sell your property and you have a sump pump installed, then your property will have a much higher value to the buyer than one that does not have a sump pump.

Sump pumps are signs that the house is in a safe condition and is also secure from floods and flooded basements. This not only makes your house more attractive to the buyer but also increases the price and value of your house.

The more advanced the sump pump you have installed, the more valuable your house will be.

5. A Great Tool To Stabilize Soil

If there is too much water in the soil, the soil can become unstable, and in return make the foundation of the house will become weak and unstable.

To increase the stability of the soil, sump pumps are installed so that the water inside the house does not seep into the soil, but collects into the sewer system.

This keeps the basement and the soil dry. Normally, areas that have aquifers need sump pumps as a large quantity of water flows there, and any stagnant water can make the soil unstable.

6. Protects Your Heating & Cooling System

Houses that have cooling or heating systems, are mostly installed inside the basement. Normally, this is not an issue, unless water floods inside.

As these devices are electronic, getting water inside these machinery could damage them. So, to protect and safeguard these heaters and coolers, you need to have a sump pump installed. This will prevent, water from floods or heavy rainfall to get into your heaters or coolers.

7. Saves Money & Time

You can guess what could happen if you do not have a sump pump installed. This can be even more difficult if you live in a flood-prone area, or an area that has heavy rainfall.

Water can get into your basement very easily and flood the entire place. Then you will need to call a plumber to drain out the water. This can get expensive and time-consuming.

But a sump pump can save all the money and time. You can also install backup sump pumps so that if one malfunctions, the other can be used and provide longer service.

Final Thoughts

If your house is in an area that has an annual high rate of rainfall, then your house may be affected by a flood more often. Flood water can seep into your basement and cause all sorts of problems for you and your house. So, get a sump pump installed and relax because they will do all the work for you, while you focus on your daily life.
