Types of Chainsaw Chains:
The type of job you need to perform with your chainsaw and the material that you need to cut through determines the type of chainsaw chain you need for your chainsaw. On the basis of the type of cutter, chainsaw chains can be classified into three groups:
Full Chisel Cutters
These chains are square toothed and are very efficient in cutting at high speeds. These chains are suitable for cutting hard material where the finish of the cut is not a factor. These chains are very prone to damage as they tey cannot resist dust. And as they work at a higher speed the risk of kickbacks is also increased.
Semi-Chisel Cutters
These chains are round toothed and work at a low speed as compared to full-chisel cutters. Being more resistant to dust and rust, these chains are excellent in cutting frozen wood and can work in dirty environments. As they work on low speed, it can cut softwood only and is unable to cut through hardwood.
Kickbacks are these in this chain too. But they are reduced as compared to full-chisel cutters.
Low Profile Cutter
Also known as chipper cutters, these chains have rounded tooths with smaller tooths in the middle to reduce the kickbacks. All these chains can be standard, semi skipped and full-skipped (series of toothing in the chains).
Things To Consider Before Buying Chainsaw Chain…
To find the best chain for your chainsaw, one would have to look for different aspects governing the overall cutting performance of the chain. Here are a few key features that determine the cutting efficiency of the chain of the chainsaw.
Size of the chain
It is the utmost important feature that needs no introduction. The size of the chain determines the overall fit of the chain on the chainsaw bar. An adequately fitted chain could work smoothly. However, a loose chain over the bar compromises the safety o the user.
The Material Used
The material used in the chainsaw chain imparts the strength to it. A sturdy material will eventually strengthen the chain making it ess vulnerable towards wear and tear. A strong chain made from material like hardened chrome always has the edge over the regular material. A pre-heated chain will impart more power and would result in clean cuts when operated. Pretreatment of the material of the chain also confers it added features like water resistance and protection from damage on contact with dust.
Type of cutting teeth
The teeth that cut will finally determine the type of cut. So, they are to be chosen wisely as per the need of the user. If the user aspires for higher speed, he should always prefer full chisel teeth. While in the cases of cutting hardwood, one must go with semi-chisel teeth.
Depth of the cutting teeth
The size of the teeth is the determining factor for how deep the chain could cut into the wood. For cutting through a hard material, opting for a model with deeper gauges is always a preferable choice.
Vibration and kickback
To have a smooth and less tiresome cutting operation, it is advisable to consider the number of vigorous vibrations and kickbacks generated by chainsaw at the time of cutting. An encounter with the robust vibrations will eventually lead to extreme fatigue experienced by the user. Intense or sudden kickbacks could compromise the safety and might result in the severe injury of the user. However, features such as automatic oiling will smoothen the whole process and would eventually result in decreased vibrations and kickbacks.
Chainsaw Bar Length
There are different sizes of chainsaw available. The chainsaw is most distinguishably described by its bar length. A chain provides on the chainsaw. This indicates that the length of the chain is equivalent to the bar that it fits. For example, a 14-inch chainsaw fits a 14-inch bar.
It is to be noted here that the length of the bar here mentioned is not the measurement of the whole bar but, in fact, the distance from the portion of the bar just after the chainsaw case to the tip of the bar.
There are, however, a few more things that need to be considered before buying a chain for the chainsaw.
Drive Lugs
Drive lugs of drive links are the medium to impart the motion to the chain, which is due to the transfer of action from chainsaw motor-powered cogs to the chain. The number of its drive lugs is also one of the factors in deciding the length of the chain to be used. Just below the chain, on its underside, are the drive lugs that could further be counted and noted.
Calculating Pitch
The second part in determining the length of the chain to be used is the pitch. It is measured by calculating the distance between three consecutive rivets on the chain. Once measured, the obtained number is then divided by 2. The resulting number is the pitch. The total length is determined by adding the total number of drive lugs to the total number of the pitch.
Chain Gauge
To ensure that the chain, apart from fitting correctly to the chainsaw, glides smoothly around the bar, one should consider the most appropriate chain gauge as it would prevent the chain from coming off from the chainsaw when in use. Gauge is determined by measuring the thickness of the lug with the help of a dial caliper.
Take the help of the purchase manuals while making the purchase.
In any case, if the chain does not fit the chainsaw properly, use the help of chainsaw professionals as the improper fit is quite hazardous.
Frequently Asked Questions About Chainsaw Chain
For how long does a regular chainsaw chain last?
Different chainsaw chains have different life based on the material used by the manufacturer and care taken by the user. A decently built chainsaw chain could last for a few years if taken care of.
How to maintain Chainsaw Chain properly?
Feed enough bar and chain oil to your chain. Avoid friction of the chain with a rock or ground.
How to determine that the chain needs sharpening?
A chainsaw chain after some time will require some maintenance. After some time, due to wearing off of the sharpness, the chain will become a bit blunt. This would require more pressure from the user’s end. Also, the smoothness of cuts will be extremely compromised.
What’re the signs of a worn-out Chainsaw chain?
There are a few signs that show the chainsaw chain needs replacement. The most prominent of them all is the poor cutting performance. It will lead to the user applying more force and would also not cut the pieces precisely. In certain conditions, due to wearing off of the sharpness of the teeth of the saw, it creates excessive friction with the wood.
This leads to heat build-up and eventually results in seeping out of the smoke from the chainsaw. All in all, it leads to uneven cuts and increased knockback and vigorous vibrations, which makes the whole task more tiresome and might also result in injury.
What is the best brand?
Many saws come with OEM (original equipment manufacturer) cutting equipment. However, for obtaining the best performance, one could go for the most trusted brands like Oregon, Husqvarna, or Stahl. They are known for their utmost material quality and smart designs.
What is a low-kickback chain? Is it essential to have one?
The low kickback chains are the chains which, while using with Chainsaw chain, do not impart too many kickback and highly energetic vibrations. This further results in reduced chances of the injury and are safe to use. In addition to that, it also results in less fatigue and hence, usage for a prolonged time on a single stretch by the user.
How many times can one sharpen a chainsaw chain?
One of the quick fixes to wear and tear of the chainsaw chain is by sharpening them—even the most robust chains of toughest materials worn out after some time. Hence, sharpening them is one of the quick fixes to bring back their sharpness and extending their life.
Sharpening the chain also results in the smooth cut by the chainsaw and hence decreases the kickback and vibrations, resulting in enhanced safety during its usage. The number of times a chain could be sharpened depend upon various factors such as the strength of the material of the chainsaw chain, its thickness, and it’s brand.
A good quality chainsaw chain could be sharpened anywhere between three to five times. However, the lifetime of a chain is also dependent upon the type of its usage and care. If the chainsaw is used for simple household operations, it could retain its capacity for more time. However, it loses its sharpness early when used for cutting hardened logs more frequently.
What are the standard, semi-skip, and full skip chains?
There are mainly three types of chains, categorized as per their motivation of usage- standard, semi-skip, and full skip chains. These chains differ in the sense that they have different numbers and configurations of the cutting teeth. The first one is the standard class.
It has the maximum number of cutting teeth. It is more suited for cutting through small parts. It is used on small and medium sizes chainsaw bar. With maximum teeth, it is extremely fast in cutting and is highly smooth. The second type is the full skip type. It is often used where there is a lot of long-cutting. The cutting teeth on this type are widely spread. This helps in getting rid of the debris quickly.
However, using this type of chain is not entirely smooth. There is a high level of kickback and vibrations, which results in early fatigue of the user and is also prone to injuries. The third type is the semi-skip chainsaw chain. Half of its cutting teeth are spread far apart while the other half is tightly packed.
How do I tighten the chain?
There are mainly two types of chainsaw according to the tightening of the chain in the market. The first one is where there is an automatic tension button where the user could twist the tension button until the required tension is achieved. The second type is where the chain is tightened manually using the essential tools.
What direction do I fit the chain?
Even if one doesn’t but a new chain other than the one brought with the chainsaw itself, one has to assemble the chain on the saw as most of the time, the chainsaw kit comes unassembled. During the assembly of the chain for the first time, the utmost care has to be taken as the chain fits in both the direction.
However, when the chain is mounted in the opposite direction on the chainsaw, it is unable to cut. Hence, just making sure that the chain fits the chainsaw bar won’t help. What one could do is to make instead sure that the cutting part is moving from the back of the chainsaw to the tip.
How tight should the chain be?
At the time of cutting by the chainsaw, after a prolonged time period, the chain starts to sag on the bar of chainsaw. This happens mainly due to the stretching of the chain. However, if the chain sags too much or is loose around the chainsaw bar, it has the possibility of coming out during the operation. This might result in an accident.
To avoid it, a few precautions should be taken to make sure that the chain fits just as fine to the chainsaw. The chain would sag a bit around the bar, but it should be just tight enough to keep the chain from being pulled out. This could be ensured by slightly stretching the chain at the bottom of the bar and making sure that it maintains an adequate amount of tension and is not coming off quickly.
What protective gear is required for using a chainsaw?
To reduce the risk of injury, the operator should wear proper protective apparel. Clothing must be sturdy and snugly fitted allowing complete freedom of movement. Loose clothing like scarfs and neckties must be avoided. The operator must wear reinforced cut retardants. Hands can be protected using heavy-duty, non-slip gloves which improves the grip of your hands. Strong footwear is recommended for the protection of the operator’s feet.
As the chainsaw produces lots of noise and clippings, one should wear ear protection along with eye and head protection. Never operate a chainsaw without proper protective gear.
Conclusion:
Chainsaw chain is one of the most critical components of the chainsaw. Different smart designs in the best chainsaw chain over the years have contributed towards improved user experience. This had made the tasks of cutting more accessible and safer. If chosen correctly, pertaining to the requirements of the user and compatibility with the chainsaw, the chains would show smooth results.
Out of all the chainsaw chains, the Oregon S62 is the best as it provides the operator with the least kickbacks and vibrations. Although it is not durable and needs to be changed more frequently it provides the best finish while it is in working condition.
