in American Fridge Freezer, Large Appliance

Like for any appliance, it is crucial to maintain your refrigerator. This guide on refrigerator maintenance shows how to take care of your refrigerator.

A broken refrigerator is a recipe for frustration. The last thing you want is for your refrigerator to stop working on you when you have essential food items in it.

However, refrigerators will fail if they are not taken care of. In order to avoid this situation, you will need to ensure that you take care of it.

You may be wondering how you can best go about doing this. Here is a refrigerator maintenance guide that will help you to make the right decisions.

1. The Condenser Coils Will Need Cleaning

Once every three months, you should use a vacuum to remove any dust that has accumulated on the coils. This is because dirt can cause the refrigerator to work harder and shorten the lifespan of the unit.

Another bad side effect of too much dust and grime on the coils is that it will increase energy usage which will see your electricity bill rising. Depending on how the fridge is built you can find the condenser coils behind or underneath the fridge.

2. Refrigerator Maintenance Involves Cleaning the Drain Hole and the Drip Pan

The drain hole and the drip pan work together to remove any condensation that is occurring in your refrigerator. Every few months remove any food particles and mineral deposits that may be sitting in the drain hole.

After you have finished this you can go ahead and scrub the drain pan.

3. Make Sure Your Gaskets Stay Clean

The white gasket that lines your refrigerator and freezer doors seal cold air in and keep warm air out of the refrigerator. This gasket is essential for the  proper functioning of your refrigerator. However, it is the part of the refrigerator that is most susceptible to getting dirty.

Examine your gaskets from time to time to see if there are any cracks or spots in it. If you find any of these things then you may want to consider replacing the gasket. If everything looks good just use some all-purpose cleaner to get everything looking shiny again.

4. Change Your Water Filter

If your refrigerator has an ice maker or a water dispenser then it more than likely has a water filter. This water filter will need to be changed regularly. You can follow these steps to get it done.

Change the filter every six months in order to keep this filter clean and your ice maker in good condition.

All Set to Take Care of Your Refrigerator

Now you know how to do refrigerator maintenance to make sure your refrigerator is working in optimal condition at all times. Make sure that you keep your condenser coils clean and that you clean your drip pan.

Examine the gasket of the refrigerator on a regular basis to ensure that they are not cracked or chipped. Take a careful look at your water filter at least every six months and make sure that they are working correctly.

Doing all of this will ensure that you keep your refrigerator working properly. If you would like more helpful tips on how to take care of your refrigerator, please visit the large appliances section of the website.
