Do you want to know something incredibly shocking? The year 1971 was fifty years ago. How time managed to trick us into thinking that the 70s weren’t a half-century away is beyond our realm of comprehension, but it’s a fact. Bell-bottoms, wicker furniture, and disco music might have long ago left your home, but the remnants of decades past might still be visible.

A house stuck in a bygone era can significantly limit its potential resale value. At one time, the avocado kitchen appliances and plaid couch might have been “far out”, but it can be tricky for prospective buyers to see past these dated items and picture themselves living in this space.

Making changes to a home that you’ve lived in for many happy decades can be daunting, but small renovations can lead to considerable monetary gains and get you the most out of your life-long investment. Check out our suggestions for quick home updates to bring your house into the current decade for a quick sale.

Ceilings

For much of the last century, stipple ceilings were all the rage. Sometimes called stucco or popcorn ceilings due to the bumpy look, or acoustic ceilings for the supposed noise-deadening benefits, stipple ceilings haven’t been in style for over twenty years. Luckily, popcorn ceiling removal is relatively quick, easy, and mess-free, thanks to modern dustless extraction systems.

Paint

In general, you should expect to need to repaint your home about every five to 10 years. However, when painting with the intention to sell, it is integral to leave your own sense of taste behind. Neutral colors are ideal when selling a home, as they do not restrict you to the style of one particular type of buyer.

Wallpaper

While wallpaper might be coming back in a big way, old-fashioned wallpaper designs and wallpaper borders are most certainly not. Moreover, wallpaper is an incredibly personal preference and is known for being difficult and pricy to remove. As such, if you expect to sell your house quickly, you should opt for painting with neutral colors and staying away from wallpaper altogether.

Carpet

Shag carpet and bright colors will date your house quicker than we can say ‘groovy, baby.’ Buyers might be especially wary of a home with carpets due to allergies, stains, or smells, especially if your house has pets,. Replacing outdated or worn carpets with laminate flooring or ceramic tiles is a smart investment when it comes to selling your home.

Appliances

Although it is not a prerequisite for appliances to be sold with a home, it is a definite advantage for bargaining power. Consider purchasing new matching kitchen appliances that make your home look more modern. Being able to offer a potential buyer a valid warranty will be a definite perk.

Home trends come in and out of style, and personal choice is just that – personal. However, when it comes time to finally sell the house you have been living in for decades, some small updates can greatly improve your selling price and captive market.
