A lawn is a great addition to any home. Along with providing you the privilege of an outdoor space to relax and enjoy, it’s also a great way of increasing the value and beauty of your home. A lawn the base on which you can build a garden and enhance your home’s landscape appeal.

However, a lawn needs to be maintained for it to stay healthy enough for a garden. Even if you’re planning on keeping it plain and simple, a properly maintained lawn can make a huge difference to the overall feel of the home. Luckily, maintenance is not a difficult task, as grass is one of the hardiest perennial herbs. Here are some tips for how you can maintain your lawn throughout the year.

Weeding

One of the most important and basic steps for lawn maintenance is controlling the growth of weeds. Weeds can appear anywhere and in several ways such as by birds, pets or other animals and even your clothing or footwear. If not removed regularly, weeds can take over the grass and deteriorate the soil. Weeds need to be pulled out with their roots. You can do this by hand or with a tool. If you have a large spread to tackle, you can try spraying low toxicity herbicides.

Thatching

Over time, your lawn might gather an organic layer of dead leaves and root stems between the leaves and the soil. This layer can create a blockage that prevents moisture and nutrients from the roots through the soil. You can remove this layer of buildup by using a tool such as a lawn scarifier to rake and remove the mulch.

Mowing

You should not let your grass grow more than 5 to 6 centimetres. The frequency of mowing will change with seasons. You might not have to mow as much during the fall, but it might become a more regular task in the summer, as the grass will grow far quicker. It is recommended to not mow a lawn when the grass or soil is wet, as it can cause damage and prevent healthy growth.

Watering and Feeding

Watering lawns is essential. If not watered adequately, the lawn will change colour and the grass will stay flat and lose its vibrance. The soil and the weather will determine the frequency at which your lawn should be watered. Frequent and light irrigation is recommended over flooding the lawn with large amounts after long intervals.

Lawns should also be treated with fertilisers and grass feeds. You will have to judge the type of soil and local weather to determine the fertiliser that will work best. Lawns should be treated at least twice a year, preferably once during spring and once in autumn.

For those who are interested in gardening, a healthy lawn is the perfect playground to get started on. Families with kids will find that having a lively outdoor is perfect to keep the kids active and busy. If maintained properly, a lawn can become the primary feature of your home instead of a neglected, unsightly area.
