New York City is one of the biggest in the world and there are so many things you need to know before moving here. Cratos Moving’s Boston to NYC movers team has put together the most important things to know before you move. We hope this article will be useful to you!

New York is full of history, excitement, late nights and more than enough opportunities for anyone who wants them. It’s also full of people doing their best to get by – whether that means making money or just taking time out. Here are some things you should know before making your dream move:

1. You will be judged on your appearance

Almost anything goes in New York but it doesn’t mean that everyone has taken advantage of that fact. A lot of people in New York, especially Manhattan, expect a certain level of dress. Men should always wear a tie and a nice clean-shaven face. Women should dress nicely and not too skimpily unless it’s the weekend!

2. There is much more to do here than there is time for:

This city never sleeps but you will need to try if you’re going to fit everything in that you want or need to do. As mentioned above, this city isn’t short on things happening every minute of the day. In fact, there are so many bars open until 4am in the morning that literally hundreds have popped up since they were all legalised around 20 years ago.

3. Be patient when looking for a job

New York has a great economy and a lot of jobs abound. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding one but there is a little bit of competition going on. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though – it just means that you need to make sure you stand out from the crowd!

4. It’s not always about making money

There are so many opportunities for work in New York that it can often be overwhelming at times. A common way people find themselves overqualified is if they’ve spent too much time focusing on how much their new job will pay them in comparison with what they earned in their last position in either America or somewhere overseas. Don’t fall into this trap – do your research!

5. Get involved with different types of people

New York is a melting pot of different cultures and types of people. You can’t really afford to hang around with the same type of person all the time – it’s not only boring but also limits your chances for social advancement. Don’t be afraid to try out new things!

6. Watch your stuff

New York has its share of crime despite being one of the safest cities in America. Make sure you have adequate insurance for everything you own as well as some extra cash saved up just in case anything happens. Also, avoid going on any late-night strolls through particularly seedy areas if possible!

7. Be a little more patient with certain things

The traffic here isn’t so bad once you learn how to live with it. The public transport is actually great and can get you anywhere you want to go in the city very quickly. Be advised, however, that there are some things out of your control when it comes to this stuff and you’ll do well to learn how to deal with them.

8. Not all buildings here are skyscrapers

You may have found images of New York City showing a lot of big cityscape shots but not all of Manhattan is skyscraper-filled. That’s just one part of the island – the rest is pretty low-rise for various reasons such as space constraints or historical value. Don’t be startled if you find yourself living in something smaller than what you were expecting!

9. Try everything once

New York is a great place for trying out new things. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve been skydiving before or you’ve never even considered it – there’s nothing to say that you can’t give it a go here and see how you like it! The city offers so many opportunities that if something doesn’t work out the first time, just try again.

10. This is not your home:

Anyone moving to New York should be aware of this because, quite frankly, they need to keep their head on straight while they’re living in this busy metropolis. You won’t find yourself settling into life here particularly quickly unless you have some sort of plan lined up for when things get tough. Make sure have enough cash on hand just in case things turn sour.
