Are you working from home? If you are, chances are you are looking for ways to sort out your new working situation so that you can concentrate better in your space. It is indeed important to consider how you can modify a particular area in your home, where you often recline and unwind, and make it into one where you can be productive and focus on doing your job for long hours.

Although this might sound like an intimidating task, it is simpler than you might think. As such, we have seven easy steps you can take to make your home a more suitable space for you to work in.

Obtain a Quality Work Desk

The first thing you need to do is look around your home and find an area where you can see yourself working because you need to pick a place and start building up your workspace there. It is great if you already have a desk in your office at home, or a side table or kitchen-countertop that you can double-up as a work surface. But if you do not live alone or cannot afford to form a specialized work area, your best alternative is to find a free space in a corner or beside a short length of empty wall to set up a temporary workplace.

From there, you might want to begin by investing in a well-made and economical fold-out desk. This will allow you to easily switch back and forth between having the table out and kept back in for work in the day and knocking off at night respectively. Alternatively, you can opt for a lap desk to hold your laptop and other work-related necessities steadily while you work if you have no space for a desk or if you simply prefer to work on your bed.

Improve Your Chair

Get rid of that stiff, uncomfortable chair because it will not do your back any good if you are going to be on it for long periods. Instead, purchase a cozy, high-quality chair that ensures your body is not stiff or painful even after sitting on it for the whole day. Trust me, it’s definitely worth the investment.

If for whatever reason, you cannot get a new chair, the least you can do is use a comfy pillow, such as a memory foam pillow, which can provide you with the necessary aid to keep you snug while you work.

Arrange Your Workspace Near a Window

As you may have heard, natural illumination enhances efficiency and lightens your mood. Wherever possible, fix your desk by a window so you can occasionally look outside for short breaks and allow some sunlight to enter your space. The natural light can wake you up while constantly giving you a feel of the outdoors.

Should you be unable to arrange your workspace beside a window, you can attempt setting up as near to one as possible. If that is still not an option for you, try finding some artificial lighting which can produce light that allows you to achieve an effect similar to that of natural light.

Change Those Bulbs

Ensuring that you have a good light source over your desk is just as crucial as being exposed to natural light. Switch out the old and dim light bulbs for fresh ones that can illuminate your workspace better. If you haven’t already done so, consider upgrading your lights to LED ones as they are a great option. On top of that, try to get one with brightening and dulling functions so the brightness can be regulated to complement your needs as you work. Nothing but the best for yourself!

Vibing With Your Space

Just because you are working from home, doesn’t mean you can’t achieve the same feeling you have when working in the office; which has your pictures and plants that keep you going every day. Fill your work desk with things that you love and bring you joy. It can be your favorite plant, scented candles, photos of friends and family, collectible action figures (if you’re into this) and really, whatever floats your boat. No matter what it is, as long as it keeps you motivated, why not have them around you as you work?

Invest in an Extension Block

Make a mental list of all the devices you need to charge — your laptop, phone, iPads, headphones, etc. This list might be even longer for some, but the point is, you will need to do a lot of charging as you work daily. To avoid a messy work station, with wires cluttered up on your desk or the floor, and overloaded power sockets, simply get a power strip. This will not only organize your workspace by having a designated charging area, but it will also allow you to charge up all your devices while keeping them nearby; freeing up unused power outlets for other purposes. What’s more, it will prevent you from falling by tripping over wires that are otherwise safety hazards. Getting one of these will surely change your life!

Get Yourself a Good Set of Headphones

When you are working from home, noise can come from nearly anywhere, be it your neighbor’s dog, your dog, the conversation of other people around you, the closing and opening of doors in your house, the television playing, etc. The problem is, we can be very easily distracted by these noises that are more salient in your home than they might be in your office. Sometimes, it only takes a drip of water leaking from your kitchen tap to distract you from your work. That’s why it is important to invest in a good pair of headphones that can shut out these noises and distractions to help you focus and work productively. There are noise-canceling headphones that can achieve this. Although some come at hefty costs, it is worth the trouble to find other ones with average pricing as they will more than sufficiently serve the same purpose.

With that, we leave you to design and make your workspace at home the best one it can be for yourself. Additionally, we’d recommend getting a room heating calculator for maximum comfort so that you can keep your room at the best temperature while saving money at the same time! You do not have to follow these tips if they are not for you. Simply do what you think is best for your workspace and for yourself. After all, nobody knows you better than yourself. That being said, feel free to take any of these seven ideas for inspiration in designing your dream workplace at home!
