When you think of an American dream house, you can’t help but think of a garden. Unfortunately, gardens can be hard to maintain and houses that have yards are expensive. People who live in urban areas are often apartment dwellers and do not have anywhere to put a garden.

A green wall can have as many different types of plants as any other garden. It often even has its own ecosystem complete with bees and butterflies.

How are green walls structured?

Green walls are designed from the same basic concept as a load-bearing wall. A load-bearing wall is one that supports the weight of the components above it, by conducting its weight to a base structure at its bottom.

To build a vertical garden, a metal frame is placed on a load-bearing wall. The metal frame supports a polyvinyl chloride plate. Two thick layers of nylon are stapled to the frame. The layers of nylon imitate the role that moss would have in nature by supporting the roots of the plants.

A network of pipes is structured and valves from those pipes seep out nutrients that are used by the plants. Water and other nutrients flow downwards and are collected in a gutter. The water and nutrients are then recycled.

Most vertical gardens are constructed on outdoor walls. However, some people do have indoor green walls.

Watering your Walls

Living plants need water and green walls are no exception. Walls can be watered by hand, but most have a built-in system of pipes.

History of the Green Wall

The invention of the green wall took place in 1938 and is attributed to Stanley Hart White, an Ivy-league educated landscaping architecture professor. He made, “botanical bricks” by simply covering walls with vegetation.

The French botanist Patrick Blanc took the concept further and patented the vertical garden that is popular today.

What are the benefits of a green wall?

Green walls not only provide oxygen and clean air, but they can also reduce noise from outside as the plants add an extra layer of installation to a building. You can even grow edible plants on a green wall.

You can grow beans and carrots in a vertical garden, as well as miniature cucumbers and eggplants. You can grow herbs for food as well as for topical use and medicinal purposes.

There are some fruits that you can grow on such a wall. They include strawberries and mini melons.

In these uncertain times, it can be very helpful to have a method of growing one’s own food and natural medicines. A garden of any kind is also beautifying for a property and increases its value.

What kind of flowers can I grow on a green wall?

The type of flowers grown on a green wall varies greatly depending on the geographical location of the building they are in and the structure of the building itself.

When you hire someone to install your vertical garden, you should look for a company that is staffed with professional botanists and landscapers. They should have years of experience in installing green walls. You can contact Andromeda District Florida for more information.
