Important Tips for Moving to an Area with Year-Round Warm Weather

in General

Table of Contents

  • Invest in Reliable Ceiling Fans
  • Outfit Your Windows with Blackout Curtains
  • Choose Cooling-Conducive Bedding
  • Make Adjustments to Your Daily Routine

For people who hail from areas known for bitterly cold winters, moving to a part of the country that enjoys warm weather year-round can be an attractive prospect. The seasons may not change in as noticeable a fashion as you’ve grown accustomed to, but no longer having to deal with freezing temperatures, copious snowfall and dangerous ice is more than a fair tradeoff. However, while they may be bereft of brutal winters, areas that are warm all year long come with their own set of challenges. So, if you’ll be buying a home in a consistently warm part of the country, take the following pointers to heart.

Invest in Reliable Ceiling Fans

Dependable ceiling fans are an absolute must for homes in warmer parts of the country. These fans can take some of the pressure off your AC by circulating cool air throughout your house. Additionally, if the temp in your area drops considerably after sunset, you can simply turn off the AC, open some windows and allow your ceiling fans and Mother Nature to take the reins during the overnight hours. To get the full cooling effect from ceiling fans, you’ll need to set them to rotate counterclockwise, as this will create a soothing artificial breeze. (Take care, of course, to turn off your ceiling fans before attempting to adjust them.) Outfit Your Windows with Blackout Curtains

Excessive sunlight stands to increase the temp in your home and force your AC to work harder. Furthermore, too much sunlight can make various parts of your home uncomfortable to be in during daylight hours. Fortunately, you can get the jump on both of these problems by outfitting your windows with high-quality blackout curtains. Per their name, blackout curtains are able to block sunlight far more effectively than traditional window dressings. Lest you be concerned that blackout curtains aren’t as stylish or eye-catching as regular curtains, you can take solace in the fact that they’re available in an extensive variety of sizes, colors and patterns.

Some blackout curtains are even effective at filtering out noise. So, if you live on a busy street or in a generally lively area, these curtains can also prove conducive to peace and quiet.

Choose Cooling-Conducive Bedding

Your home is meant to be a place where you can let your hair down and relax – and no activity is more relaxing than a good night’s sleep. Unfortunately, extreme heat can make a peaceful night’s slumber a difficult prospect. To help prevent yourself from tossing, turning and sweating throughout the night, invest in bedding that’s ideal for warm weather. When shopping around for the right bedding, keep an eye out for sheets, blankets and comforters made from cotton and linen. Since both of these fabrics are woven from highly breathable natural fibers, they can help you stay cool during the overnight hours and set the stage for a comfortable night’s rest.

Make Adjustments to Your Daily Routine

Relocating to a warmer climate may also mean making adjustments to your daily routine. For example, using certain appliances during daylight hours stands to increase the temperature in your home. That being the case, you may want to consider holding off on baking and laundry-related tasks until the sun goes down. Furthermore, it’s generally a good idea to avoid spending large amounts of time outdoors during the sun’s peak hours. You’ll also need to be adamant about applying sunscreen, investing in sun-blocking clothing and taking other skin-protecting measures.

If you’re used to enduring snowy, frigid, icy winters, the opportunity to relocate to an area with a more agreeable climate is something you’re likely to jump at. In addition to being exhausting and uncomfortable, extreme winter weather can be outright dangerous. Shoveling heavy snow, navigating ice-caked surfaces and driving on slippery roads are all commonplace wintertime obstacles that can result in personal injury – or worse. While there are many advantages to living in a more agreeable climate, hotter areas are not bereft of challenges. Anyone who will soon be charting a course for a locale that enjoys year-round warm weather should put the previously discussed measures to good use.
