If living in an urban area where space comes at a premium, you may be compelled to give up certain items like a 10-foot sofa or a gigantic TV stand. It doesn’t mean you can’t accessorize your small apartment. In fact, there are many ways to keep your living space beautiful, stylish, and modern. We look at some of them:

Take Advantage of Built-in Shelves and Furniture

Built-in fixtures not only add storage space to your living room but also help save on space. You can hire a carpenter to customize the items or buy a custom piece that blends in with the space.

If you don’t want to hire a professional, get creative and do a few DIY projects. For example, you can float a deep shelf equipped with brackets on the wall to act as a desk.

Also, consider placing shelves in an artistic pattern on the wall to create a media unit. All such ideas help create a beautiful and stylish space, and you don’t need to spend much

2. Leverage on Area Rugs

You can never go wrong with an area rug. Place at the center of the room, making the area appear larger while harmonizing the space. It should be large enough to fit the living room while allowing you to tuck it under the furniture. This trick works on other spaces in the apartment too.

The bedroom space is probably small, so you want to strategically place the rug to make the area appear larger. The most preferred way is to lay the rug in the middle of the room.

The idea is to maximize the usable rug space and leave a soft surface to step on when getting out of bed. If not sure about the style, color, pattern, or the size, visit a store specializing in area rugs.

Finding a high end rug store in a city like Los Angeles is easy; and the good news is that the attendants are conversant with the subject hence likely to recommend a rug to fit your space perfectly.

3. Place the Furniture Away from the Walls

Many people believe that placing furniture against the walls provides more floor space. It couldn’t be further from the truth. On the contrary, furniture should be placed away from the walls to create more fluidity and make space appear bigger. While the visible floor space might not be as large, this arrangement makes it feel less cluttered.

4. Use the Right Proportions of Furniture

It is natural to assume that small pieces of furniture are better than large ones. It isn’t true. Such details only make a small living space appear cluttered. It would help if you picked a large sectional sofa to make the apartment feel larger.

The key is to ensure it has the same color as the walls, rug, or other dominant schemes. Also, choose a design with a less sleek look, e.g., an armless sofa, to avoid adding too much visual bulk. Then keep the rest of the living space minimal.

5. Allow as Much Natural Light

Ditch the drapes during the day to allow as much natural light to illuminate the space. But if privacy is a problem, consider hanging semi-sheer curtains instead of blinds. Be sure to hang them slightly above the window and allow them to fall to the floor to add some height to the room.

6. Create a Focal Point

A mural, large painting, or other distinct feature takes eyes off the small living space. You can place the picture, wall covering, or mirror behind the sofa. The trick is to hang the item in a strategic area in the room.

7. Play around with Lighting

Consider complementing natural lighting with smaller artificial lighting solutions. Wall lights and side lamps are great at creating a soft and ambient glow in the evening without taking up too much floor space. Add an overhead light, too, and ensure they are all at different levels to create small pools of light around the room.
