When you should consider replacing your plumbing

in Kitchen & Bath Fixtures

Like every machine or equipment has wear and tear, so does your plumbing system. As the plumbing system gets old, there is always more risk of breaks, cracks, and leaks. However, when you see that these problems are occurring very frequently, you need to replace the pipes to avoid more complex problems.

A pipe showing freeze damage

You may not be an expert, but if you can identify some of these tell-tale signs that let you know when you should change the plumbing, it can save you a lot of hassle. Let’s find out what these are to help you quickly recognize the signs.

  • Life Span of Different Materials

The pipes have an average life span depending on the type of material they are made up of and you should keep a lookout accordingly. While a PVC pipe has a life span between 20 and 40 years, the copper pipes can last up to 80 years, and cast iron ones, anywhere between 80 and 100. However, remember that these are average timelines, and the situation in your home may keep them fine longer or need replacement earlier. Hence keep an eye on these other signs.

  • Changing Water Color

If you notice that the water looks strange and the color is not what it was earlier, it is a sure sign of something going wrong with the piping. The brown color could be due to the rust or sedimentation that got deposited in the pipes for years. You should call for experts quickly.

  • Strange Odor

Another tell-tale sign that indicates problems with your plumbing is a foul rotting odor in the water. This indicates that the pipes are no longer clean and probably have bacteria and other microorganisms growing in them. In this case, it can be a health hazard for the family.

  • Reduced water pressure

If you notice that the water pressure has sharply dropped in the showerhead or the faucets, there is suspected clogging, or your pipes may have developed cracks or leaks. These leaks, apart from slowing down the water-flow can damage the foundation and interiors. If there are multiple leaks around the house, it may be time to replace the plumbing in denver, colorado. If you hear a gurgling sound from the wall, there is likely a crack or pipe burst that is responsible for reduced water pressure and needs immediate attention.

  • Molds or stains around the house

If you notice mold growing around the house despite your best efforts to clean the house, check the piping around such spots. There is likely some crack or leak due to which the wet floor or wall has these growths. The leak can cause damages.

There can even be damp patches and stains around appliances or certain areas around the piping. You can notice these around washing machines, heaters, etc., and this can indicate that your plumbing requires change, and you should contact the technician without delay. The health of the family, especially in these extraordinary times, should be of prime importance.

So these few signs can indicate that there are increasing wear and tear on your plumbing system and that it may need replacement soon. It is good to get a full inspection done by experts once in a year and definitely before winter sets in. This will prevent you from a disaster at the peak of winter when several plumbing problems occur due to the temperature dip. Often, the repairs not done in time create bigger problems and may cause more damages or expenses. Therefore, keep an eye on the issues and plan replacement well in advance
