This Is What You Need to Do When a Water Pipe Bursts in Your Home

in Tools & Home Improvement

What do you do when all of a sudden your water pipe bursts? A sudden rush of water into your home can send you into a panic. You’ll no doubt be fearful of your possessions getting ruined.

What can you do when you’ve got a burst pipe? How can you help while you’re waiting for a plumber to come?

There are plenty of things that you can do to prevent your home and your possessions from getting damaged when a water line bursts.

Here’s what to do when a pipe bursts in your house.

What to Do as Soon as the Water Pipe Bursts

Immediately after your water pipe bursts, your reaction might be to panic and to start moving your possessions out of the way of the water. Doing this is not helpful.

Stay as calm as possible and head to your water main. Your number one priority should be to stop the water from your home immediately.

If you live in a flat or an apartment and you don’t have access to the water supply, then you should contact your building manager straight away.

Once the water is turned off at the mains, you should also turn off the electricity. If there live electrical appliances are affected by water, they could spark a fire.

Drain Your Faucets

The next step that you should take is to drain your faucets. There will still be a build-up of water in your pipes and this could all flood out into your home. To lower the chances of this happening, you should drain all of your faucets.

Make sure you drain both your hot and cold faucets and do every faucet in the house. The pipes should be thoroughly drained. This will ensure all pressure has been removed from the pipes.

Call a Plumber

Once you have turned your water and electricity off and have safely drained all of the water from your home, you’ll need an emergency plumber to get your pipe repaired. You won’t be able to safely use water or electricity in your home until they’ve repaired your pipes.

You may be tempted to carry out the work yourself, however, without the right skills and expertise you run the risk of the pipe breaking again.

It is far better to hire a professional emergency plumber that will respond quickly.

Clear Up The Flooding

The next step will be to clear up the flooding. Using old towels and mops, you should try and remove as much of the water as possible before it starts to soak into your walls.

Untreated damp may lead to mold and it is vital to use dehumidifiers to reduce the chances of moisture damaging your home.

Call a water damage specialist for help with flood repair.

Stay Calm and Act Fast

When your water pipe bursts it needn’t be the end of the world. Stay calm, and turn off your water and electricity.

By acting quickly, you could save your home from watery ruin.
