If You Love Your Home, Make Sure You Have the Right Insurance

in Buyer's Guide

If you love your home, make sure you have the right insurance

Your house is your palace. You probably work hard to pay for your home, maintain it and make it even more beautiful. The same goes for the garden. For many people, gardening is pure relaxation, but also wonderful to sit in on a beautiful spring day, summer day or autumn day.

Naturally, you want to do everything you can to protect the house, its contents and the garden against fire, loss and burglary. There are various insurance policies for this. But many people do not have these insurance policies or do not care about them after taking out. And that is not only a shame, there are also dangers to not being insured or uninsured.

You can suffer damage not only from a fire or a burglary in your home. No matter how careful you are, you too can cause an accident in which someone is injured. Or one of your children accidentally bumps into an expensive vase that falls and breaks. You can then be held liable. Before you know it, you will have a personal injury lawyer in Rotterdam (Dutch: letselschade advocaat Rotterdam) at your door with a personal injury claim. Here too, insurance is necessary.

Liability insurance

One of the most important insurance policies is liability insurance. And yet many people do not have these, no matter how obvious it is to have them. Not having liability insurance can get you into serious trouble. If you cause damage to a property or person, you will be responsible for the damage yourself. And this damage can occur, in the event of a broken vase, but especially if there is personal injury.

In the case of personal injury, the victim of an accident is entitled to compensation for all damages. This may include material damage and damages (Dutch: smartengeld). Material damage items are all damage items that can be valued in money. Loss of income as a result of disability is a well-known example of this. After all, if someone becomes incapacitated for work due to a car accident, bicycle accident or dog bite, this person will lose all or part of his or her income. This is damage that the person who caused the accident must pay.

If you have liability insurance, the liability insurance will process the personal injury claim and pay out the damage to the victim. But if you are not insured, the damage will be at your own expense.

In addition to material damage, there is also a right to compensation for damages if a third party is liable for the damage. But what is compensation for damages?

Compensation for damages in your house or elsewhere

Compensation for damages is compensation for the suffering caused to someone by an accident. This may involve psychological complaints, fear of driving, fear of dogs after a dog bite or pain complaints.

So make sure you are properly insured against liability.

Other important insurance policies as a homeowner

Probably every homeowner has buildings insurance, fire insurance and contents insurance. However, many people no longer have to worry about it after closing. Wrongly!

Suppose you took out home contents insurance and fire insurance 5 years ago. You never thought about the fact that you have this insurance. If disaster strikes and your house burns down, you should take out home insurance. But there is a chance that you will no longer be able to fully cover the damage with the insured amount. This is then referred to as under-insurance. The reconstruction value has increased in those 5 years.

So check your insurance regularly so that you are not at financial risk if something happens in or to your house and garden.
